Dorato Valmalenco (trade names: Sarizzo Dorato, Granito Dorato, Serizzo Dorato) is a coarse-grained, broadly non-directional gneiss of Paleozoic metamorphic origin from the Valmalenco Valley in Lombardy, northern Italy. The name 'Dorato' (golden) reflects the warm golden-yellow cast imparted by feldspars and phlogopite against a grey-green ground. The stone belongs to the same Serizzo family of Alpine gneisses as Monte Rosa and Ghiandone. Technical data (DNSA Stein 791): density 2810 kg/m³, compressive strength 152 MPa, flexural strength 23.2 MPa, water absorption 0.32%. The stone is acid-resistant and frost-resistant. Important limitation: only matte gloss is achievable; high-gloss polishing is not possible with this stone. Widely used and frequently specified in Germany (DNSA: 'In Deutschland häufig eingesetzt!'). Applied in exterior paving, steps, cladding, and interior flooring.
