Travertin Navona, also known as Travertino Navona or Travertino Romano Chiaro, is a Quaternary travertine deposited at Bagni di Tivoli in the Lazio region near Rome. It is one of the most historically and commercially significant natural stones in the world — used extensively since Roman antiquity, including famously in the Colosseum. The stone is characterised by a warm beige to cream colour, with characteristic voids (pores) typical of travertine, which is usually sold in a filled (filled pores) or unfilled state. The name 'Navona' is a German/Italian market trade designation for this stone, explicitly listed as an alias in DNSA. Important limitations: exterior polish is not durable per DNSA; the stone is acid-sensitive (CaCO3 base); water absorption is relatively high at 2.0% (unfilled).
