Solnhofener (DNSA #132, #330, #863, #1265, #1555, #1638: SOLNHOFEN = LITHOGRAFENSTEIN; SC s67: Solnhofen Stone = Franconia Stone) is a Jurassic lithographic limestone from Solnhofen, Weissenburg-Gunzenhausen district, Franconia, Bavaria, Germany. World-famous as the site of exceptional fossil preservation including Archaeopteryx. The stone splits along natural bedding planes into characteristic thin plates (hence: Plattenkalk = plate limestone). Beige to gold/ivory tones with fossilized imprints of prehistoric plants and animals. DNSA tech data (multiple entries, all identical): density 2550-2700 kg/m3, abrasion 15 cm3/50cm2, flexural 2.45 MPa (characteristic low value for thin split slabs), thermal 0.49 mm/m/100K. Acid-sensitive (carbonate). Polishing possible but unusual and not durable outdoors. Typically used in natural split, sawn, or sanded finish. Very frequently used in Germany. INSK 69.3 (old: 8.4.10).
