Mainsandstein Rot is a German red sandstone from the Triassic Main Sandstone Formation in the Spessart and Main Valley region of Bavaria and Baden-Württemberg.
Mainsandstein Rot (Red Main Sandstone) is a regional trade designation for Triassic red sandstones from the Buntsandstein (Triassic) formation quarried along the Main valley in the Spessart region of Bavaria and Baden-Württemberg, Germany. Multiple named quarry variants exist: Dietenhan Rot, Miltenberg, Bürgstadt, Wüstenzell, Eichenbühl, Rettersbach, among others — all fine-grained red sandstones with slightly varying technical properties depending on the specific quarry zone. The stone has been used in German historic buildings and is still widely quarried today. DNSA documents: acid-resistant, frost-resistant; however floor use is barely suitable due to low abrasion resistance and difficulty cleaning. Properties vary across quarries: density 2080–2400 kg/m³, compressive 55–92 MPa, flexural 5–9.5 MPa, water absorption 3.5–7.2%.
