Über Black Lapponia
Lapponia Black is a Precambrian pyroxenite quarried in the Keminmaa / Kemijärvi area of Finnish Lapland, near the Arctic Circle. Documented in DNSA as entry #2854. The stone is a medium-grained, largely isotropic intrusive rock dominated by pyroxene (augite 66.1%), with olivine (13.2%), plagioclase (12.1%), amphibole/hornblende (5.2%), biotite (2.4%), and ore minerals (1%). The extremely high density (3260 kg/m³) is characteristic of pyroxenite. DNSA confirms frost resistance. Acid sensitivity is partial — individual mineral components (olivine, some pyroxene) are not permanently acid-resistant. Polish is possible but only conditionally durable outdoors. DNSA technical data: density 3260 kg/m³, compressive strength 133 MPa, flexural strength 16.4 MPa, water absorption 0.08%. Input material group 'Hard Rock' is a commercial trade category; correct petrographic type is pyroxenite (ultramafic plutonic rock).
