Über Seagrass
Seagrass is a commercial name for a fossil-bearing calcitic stone quarried in Safranbolu-Yağlıca Village, Eflani district, Karabük province, Turkey. SC s1779 (Seagrass Marble) and s3576 (Seagrass Grey Marble) are the two primary variants from the same quarry area: the green variety (s1779) is characterised by soft earth-grey to sage-green tones; the grey variety (s3576) has predominantly grey tones with green-silver accents. Both contain small shelly fossil segments embedded in the stone, giving it a distinctive organic, fossilised texture. Petrographic note: SC classifies both as 'Marble' but many trade aliases use 'Limestone' — the stone is marketed under both labels; its fossil content suggests a calcareous limestone or transitional bioclastic limestone. Technical data from s1779 (MPa): density 2656-2699 kg/m3, compressive 132.06-145.34 MPa, flexural 17.05-50.00 MPa (wide range), water absorption 0.36% by weight / 0.94% by volume. s3576 data in kg/cm2 converts to: density 2699 kg/m3, comp 136.4-142.6 MPa, flexural 16.74 MPa, water 0.35% by weight — consistent with s1779. Applications: countertops, wall/floor cladding, mosaics, stairs, pool coping. Interior and exterior. Acid-sensitive as limestone/carbonate stone.
