Alta Quarzit, officially named ALTA in DNSA and also traded as Polar-Quarzit and Midnight Sun, is a mica quartzite (Glimmerquarzit) quarried near Alta in Finnmark county, northern Norway. The stone is Precambrian in age and largely non-directional in structure. With 83% quartz content, it is extremely hard and durable. DNSA notes it as very commonly used in Germany. Polish is possible but unusual -- the stone is primarily valued for its natural split surface used in exterior paving, plazas, and facades. Technical data from DNSA: density 2710 kg/m3, compressive strength 260.8 MPa, compressive strength after frost cycling 246.6 MPa, flexural strength 38.4 MPa, abrasion resistance 6.4 cm3/50cm2, water absorption 0.10%. Acid-resistant; frost-resistant.
